We first started by making some space. The OE battery was scraped in favor of dual Optima batteries mounted in a custom welded bracket. The new location of the batteries and OE fuse/relay panel allow for easy servicing and gave us more useable space.
We rearranged the configuration of the trunk for the audio system while keeping enough space for some clubs. Within the enclosure there are four 10” subs ran in a ported configuration and three power amplifiers. The enclosures and amp rack have been trimmed in black Alcantera. With aluminum we fabricated and polished trim rings for the port openings and amplifier mounting plates.
We used a combination of black Alcantera, leather and polished aluminum to achieve the desired look and match the OE theme. The 3 dimensional Benz logo in the center of the cover panel was created to scale using AutoCAD and then fabricated using a variety of techniques and covered with Alcantera. No bass energy is wasted rattling the trunk. With the ¾” Plexiglas backed enclosure all sound is forced into the interior.
Within the enclosure we added some accent lighting to highlight the components.
To compensate for the intense bass, we added a couple of additional speakers to the front doors. We wanted to follow the exiting door panel lines and trim. The additional speakers are mounted to a fiberglass panel wrapped with black Alcantera and the lower portion of the door panel had to be reworked and upholstered with OE materials. The Germans used a chrome trim around switches and vents, so we added the same touch throughout the vehicle.
Driver’s side door panel matches the passenger door panel, cause that’s how we roll.
We reworked the rear doors to follow the same design as the fronts.
To keep the sounds up high, additional tweeters were integrated into the front pillars, which were also reupholstered in black Alcantera.
The trunk release switch was relocated from the driver’s door into the center console area.
